Time of The Thieves introduce you to:
Jesse Treece

TTT. What’s your name?

J.T. Jesse Treece.

TTT. Where were you born and where do you live?

J.T. Born and still living in Seattle, Wa.

TTT. What is your profession?

J.T. I pay my bills working at a hospital by day and make collages from vintage books and magazines by night (or something like that).

TTT. When did you start working with collages and why?

J.T. I had some images cut out from old magazines a number of years ago which I never did anything with. When I came across the images again I started playing around with them and had my first collage made almost immediately. There was something very satisfying about the process and it seemed to awaken some creativity that had lain dormant in me for a while so I felt compelled to keep making them. I can’t stop now!

TTT. What are your favorites artists or which artists have influenced your work?

J.T. As far as other collage artists that inspire me, there are a bunch: Anthony Zinonos, Jeffrey Meyer (Goofbutton), Compound Shaw, Mary Virginia Carmack, Delilah Jones, Arturo Medrano, Amelie Chunleau, Bryan Olson (Glass Planet). I also find inspiration in comic book/comic strip art, music, movies, books etc.. Some artists/authors/musicians that have blown my mind and continue to do so are Salvador Dali, George Herriman, Jean Giraud (Moebius), Bill Watterson, Paul Pope, Brecht Vandenbroucke, Robert Pollard, Chameleons UK, Philip K Dick, Michael Deforge, Haruki Murakami, Jeff Smith, JRR Tolkien.

TTT. What are the elements that inspire you in your work (images, feelings, music characters)?

J.T. I flip through a lot of magazines and sometimes an image will just jump out at me and I know I have to use it. I like to work with interesting color combinations and landscapes (I’ve been obsessed with using mountains lately). Finding images that seem like they were always meant to be together, no matter how incongruous, is the magical part of the process and it’s usually a gut feeling that tells me if I’m on the right track or not.

TTT. Can you tell us what you’re looking to convey with your work?

J.T. A sense of wonder, simple beauty, a shift in perspective, a combination of elements that I haven’t seen before.

TTT. Have you ever exhibited and if you have, where has it been?

J.T. I have been involved in a couple of local artwalk shows and a collage exhibition in the UK earlier in the year and I just had a piece included in the launch show for  www.artistic.ly  last month. I’m really just starting to do some leg work on getting my stuff into galleries though. I do have some exhibition possibilities coming up in the new year that I’m hoping will pan out.

TTT. What music are you listening to?

J.T. I constantly listen to music when I’m working. At the moment I’m really into The Rifles, The Hidden Cameras, My Bloody Valentine, Glen Campbell, The Fresh & Onlys, East River Pipe, Guided By Voices, Devon Williams, New Model Army, The Jesus And Mary Chain, William Basinski, Dunes, Goya Dress, Veronica Falls, Big Troubles. This list could go on and on.

TTT. Which websites do you like?

J.T. I follow a lot of music blogs like The Big Takeover, Raven Sings The Blues, The Bay Bridged, Chromewaves, Yvynyl, Cactus-Mouth, Smoke Don’t Smoke. Also art/comics blogs like 50 Watts, Michael Deforge’s amazing work at  http://michaeldeforge.wordpress.com/ and Brandon Grahams excellent comics blog http://royalboiler.wordpress.com/ constantly turns me onto great stuff, new and old.

TTT. What are you reading now?

J.T. I’ve been going back and forth between Saga Of The Swamp Thing by Alan Moore/Stephen Bissette, 20th Century Boys by Naoki Urasawa, Finder by Carla Speed Mcneil and The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi. I’m also really looking forward to diving into Haruki Murakami’s 1Q84.

TTT. What is your favorite place?

J.T. I fell in love with Australia when I got to visit Perth a number of years ago, I would definitely love to go back there sometime.

TTT. Can you tell us in what circumstances you made this collage?

J.T. I think I actually made this in winter time. Maybe it was my wish for the return of warmer weather and youthful exuberance haha.

TTT. If you could associate this image with a song, which would it be?

J.T. Well, I named it after one of my favorite songs by The Undertones, “Here Comes The Summer” so definitely that one. I name a lot of collages after songs, even if it’s not something I’m listening to while making them.

TTT. What do you feel when you look at this collage?

J.T. I feel like this piece (and the other work I was making at the time) was a turning point for me and I’m still really happy with how it came out. If I remember right, it came together really fast and almost without having to think about it. I think it helped me put more trust in my hands to bring these elements together harmoniously.
